GREAT EXPECTATIONS CHARITY
GREAT EXPECTATIONS CHARITY

Mission Statement

Our goal is simple and achievable.  Poverty in developing countries is severe and it is impossible to help the multitude, but we know that through our efforts we can make a positive difference to the lives of some and that is a worthy achievement, just as in the ‘Starfish poem’ below.

Great Expectations charity was setup in 2015. Its mission statement is to set up and/or assist in improving schools in under privileged countries, and to start with in Tanzania as that is a country where the Trustees already have established links which will greatly facilitate the charitable endeavour. It is an opportunity to make a difference to young lives which will have positive repercussions for generations to come. We welcome all support, however little.

The 2 classroom project has been completed at Elerai School, Arusha. The news was featured in an article published by the Slough Observor newspaper: see link here

Below are older pictures of the older classrooms. These items were posted before the new classrooms were built.

Elerai School, Arusha, Tanzania

A school in the slum areas of Arusha town. Over 1000 children from the slum attend this school and share less than 10 classrooms by attending the school in shifts. The school has the most basic of facilities. GE's current project is to build 2 or more classrooms and gradually improve the facilities at the school. Here are some recent pictures taken at the school and surrounding area.

The boys pictured are playing football; the football is made out of rubber bands wrapped around a newspaper, made in to a ball shape

           THE STARFISH POEM

Once upon a time there was a wise man

Who used to go to the ocean to do his writing.

He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day he was walking along the shore.

As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer.

He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day.

So he began to walk faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn’t dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore,

Picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean.

As he got closer he called out,

“Good morning! What are you doing?”

The young man paused, looked up and replied,

“Throwing starfish in the ocean.”

“I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?”

“The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don’t throw them in they’ll die.”

“But young man, don’t you realise that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can’t possibly make a difference!”

The young man listened politely. Then bent down, picked up another starfish

And threw it in to the sea, past the breaking waves and said –

“It made a difference for that one.”
